Well that didn’t take long.
The last design for this site just didn’t sit right with me in the long run. I could never quite put my finger on it, but it just didn’t “work”. I do know that I wanted to go back to something simpler and less cluttered—and the result is what you now see here. About as uncluttered as it gets, really (at least for me). It’s been a long time since I’ve done a design that so heavily relies on centered elements, but I have to say, this is the first personal design I’ve done in awhile that doesn’t immediately start making me think “well, gee, maybe I should do it this way instead… just a little tweak…”. So maybe I won’t futz with this one quite so soon.
The other change (and one that’s invisible to everyone but me) is that I’ve switched hosts. This site is now being hosted by Media Temple. The main issue with my previous host (I’m being nice and not naming names—feel free to ask me directly if you want to know): I’d randomly lose service for my site (web, e-mail, everything) once a week or so, and there was never an explanation why—it was always “file a ticket and we’ll look at it”, and service would magically come back after a bit but with no explanation as to what happened and, more importantly, why it kept happening. I’m the one paying the money, remember? So, as they say, I voted with my feet.
Media Temple’s (gs) Grid-Service hosting service looks (at least on paper) to provide me with more reliability than I was getting with my previous host, and even though it’s a bit more expensive than any host I’ve previously used, I’m at the point where the added reliability is worth a couple of extra bucks a month.
